Hip Hop
Hip hop is a popular, energetic dance style, usually danced to hip hop music. It's popular among kids and tweens. Although it does not teach the technique a discipline such as ballet would teach, students do have to master coordination of arms and feet at times moving at a fast pace. This style is known for fast, athletic movements and lots of popping and jolting, as opposed to the fluid balletic types of dance. “Hip-Hop” is extremely popular these days and can be seen virtually everywhere, from commercials to artists in concerts. Our “Hip-Hop” classes include extensive strength training, coordination skill exercises, flexibility activities, leaps, turns and combinations in the center to recognizable, age-appropriate music. Students will learn choreography that is used in current NBA games. NO vulgar music or inappropriate songs played.

B-boy / Break Dancing
Breakdancing is a form of hip hop that many people enjoy watching, with it's cool moves and quick spins. Breakdancing moves take a lot of time and practice to master, particularly the ones performed near the ground, called "downrock" moves. "Uprock" moves, which are performed standing up, give breakdancers a chance to incorporate their own styles. This class is open to both boys and girls.

Broadway
Broadway dance can be defined as the incorporation of ballet, jazz and modern dance styles with theater and singing. Think "Chorus Line" kind of big, choreographed theatrical routines such as the shows made popular by Bob Fosse. Broadway dance is different from other styles because the fusion of ballet, jazz and modern allows for unconventional movements and unusual use of body parts and the use of theater props such as canes, top hats and gloves. It also blends in acting and singing. If your child loves dancing and singing around the house, this is probably the perfect class for them! (Classes may or may not involve light singing, at the instructors discretion)

Jazz
The “Jazz” dance style covers perhaps the most territory of all. It encompasses a wide variety of other styles. Not to be confused with the musical genre of “Jazz”, this style of dance is not always performed to “Jazz” music, but can often use the popular music of today. Combining the basic techniques of ballet with the more modern steps found in Pop and Broadway, “Jazz” is an upbeat, stylish, and versatile dance form. Our “Jazz” classes include intensive strengthening warm ups, stretching techniques to elongate and encourage muscle strength, across the floor movements, leaps, turns and center combination work to fun and upbeat, recognizable music. Our student will have great knowledge of their terminology, a visual change in strength and flexibility, and a great appreciation for the dance form.

Ballet
“Ballet” is the fundamental, technical form from which all other dance styles stem. We encourage all of our students to take a ballet class along with another style they may deem more "fun". Without at least minimal ballet training, vital technique is not learned which is critical in all forms of dance -- yes, even hip hop. All the names (derived from the French) of basic dance steps and related terminology arise from “Ballet”. The most classic and often serious dance form, “Ballet” teaches young dancers the most rudimentary terms and techniques and is monumentally important for all dancers to establish and maintain proper form. Our “Ballet” classes include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 8 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels. Primary through Level 3 will be taught by ABT® Certified Teacher, Antonette Knoedl, who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Lyrical
This beautiful, expressive style if often performed to slower, gentler music. It is called “Lyrical” because its movements are meant to tell audiences a kind of story through dance. The form combines Ballet techniques with the Jazz and Modern styles influencing the movements. An emotionally driven dance form, “Lyrical” depends greatly on the passion and interpretation of the performer, and not just the movements themselves. “Lyrical” is added to some advanced Ballet and Jazz classes.

Modern
Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for dancers to invent new steps for their routines. Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. This type of dancer rejects the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body, often opting instead for a more relaxed, free style of dancing.

Tap
“Tap” is a percussive style of dance. Special shoes are worn by tap dancers to create various rhythms on the floor. While the rest of the body is still crucial to this art form, and general balance and grace are important, the fundamental characteristic of “Tap” is the sound it creates. There are different styles of this dance form, from the more classical form associated with the Rockettes, to a more modern, aggressive style called “hoofing”. Our “Tap” classes include tap-barre, center exercises, tap-turns both center and across the floor, and extensive rhythmic combination training. Our students will have an overall comprehension of rhythm, tap technique and terminology which will greatly enhance their coordination skills.
